Power in community
Mental Health Awareness Week 2025, taking place from 12–18 May, centres on the theme ‘Power in Community’. Organised by the Mental Health Foundation, this annual event highlights the vital role communities play in supporting mental wellbeing across the UK.
Why Community Matters
Strong social connections and supportive communities are fundamental to good mental health. They provide a sense of belonging, purpose, and resilience during challenging times. Research indicates that individuals who are more socially connected experience greater happiness, better physical health, and longer life expectancy compared to those who are less connected.
In the UK, community initiatives such as peer support groups, local mental health charities, and neighbourhood activities offer safe spaces for individuals to share experiences and find solidarity. These grassroots efforts are instrumental in reducing stigma and fostering environments where mental health is openly discussed and supported.
Getting Involved
This Mental Health Awareness Week, there are numerous ways to celebrate and strengthen your community:
Organise a “Wear It Green Day”: Encourage your workplace, school, or community group to wear green, the international colour for mental health awareness, to show solidarity and spark conversations.
Share Your Story: Use the hashtag #ThisIsMyCommunity on social media to highlight what community means to you and how it supports your mental health.
Host a Community Event: Arrange a local gathering, such as a coffee morning, walk, or workshop, to bring people together and discuss mental wellbeing.
Utilise Available Resources: The Mental Health Foundation provides free materials, including posters, social media graphics, and activity guides, to help you plan and promote your events. Mental Health Foundation
Support in Scotland
For those in Scotland, organisations like SAMH (Scottish Action for Mental Health) and See Me Scotland offer resources and programmes tailored to local communities. These include anti-stigma campaigns, mental health training, and support services designed to empower individuals and communities alike.
Building Lasting Connections
Beyond this awareness week, consider ways to maintain and deepen community ties:
Volunteer: Offer your time to local organisations or initiatives that promote mental wellbeing.
Join Local Groups: Participate in clubs, classes, or support groups that align with your interests and values.
Check In Regularly: Maintain consistent communication with friends, family, and neighbours to foster strong, supportive relationships.
By actively engaging in our communities, we not only enhance our own mental health but also contribute to a collective resilience that benefits everyone.
